millions of gun owners and their ultrapowerful lobbying group the nra. the latest push coming from senator dianne feinstein, the california democrat who authored the nation's original ban on assault weapons in the 1990s, but this ban would reportedly be much more strict. it would trap current gun owners and outlaw the future sale of some handguns and shotguns. joe johns joins us from washington, i understand that senator feinstein will show up holding a bushmaster. >> reporter: we don't know if she'll be holding it but we know she is going to have some weapons present that would be banned under her proposal, that would include bushmaster, as you know, they're fairly well-known, a bushmaster was we believe used by the shooter in newtown, connecticut. now, we know the broad outlines of what feinstein is likely to promow propose. it's been public for weeks. we look for detail, we expect a revised ban on the so-called military style assault weapons led to believe that means banning the sale, transfer, importation or manufacturing of about 150 firearms, some rifles, even possibly handguns, shot
know, the nra is not in line with an awful lot of their members, and that is something we're counting on to go forward. i've gone through this before. i know what the battles are going to be. i know the nra is probably already out there. you probably saw that new ad that they just put out attacking the president and his two daughters. that's crazy. everybody knows that the president and his family have to be protected. but to try to push that over on to the, their probably most radical members of the nra, that's now how the general public feels. i believe we can do it. this time it is different. this time it's gone to the heart of every mother, father, gra grandparent thinking about their children, grandchildren. we have to do something. all these mass killings and the killings that happen every single day, as the president said, 900 people have died since the day that sandy hook happened. that's too many of our people. i'm speaking as a nurse. it's cost us over $200 billion a year for those that survive. and for everything that we need to do to protect our cities and our communities.
lapierre executive vice president of the nra issues a fundraising letter saying this. i warned you this day was coming and now it's here. it's not about protecting your children. it's not about stopping crime. it's about banning your guns period. so what are we seeing here? a real political campaign. >> on the one side you have the grassroots organization that the obama for america team use. now, they can't coordinate with the white house, wolf, on this, but they are using all of their apparatus to get out their grass root supporters because what they are trying to do is mobilize voters in much the same way that the nra has done over the years, which is make people who are for some kind of gun regulation, single issue voters and come out and pressure members of congress who may be wavering in gun states and say to them, you know, we want something done. on the other side is the nra which has a huge grassroots organization. they are trying to mobilize their own voters. you saw that e-mail. we spoke yesterday about this provocative ad talking about the president'
